1982 (APELAND, SKARBØ, ØKLAND)
The group 1982 plays modern improvised music. The members of this distinctive trio, who have worked together since 2006, say themselves that it is “quite a cheeky record”. They are now releasing their first LP on NORCD. We are very proud to be able to present this trio’s music, and to be able to do so in collaboration with the group’s musical and creative prime mover, drummer Øyvind Skarbø.
This release holds a sting, and will surprise many listeners. It is also a departure from what some listeners might have expected after having heard 1982 in concert in the past few years. This improvised interplay has intense drive, soul and a spirit of renewal. One can sense the presence of something old and something new at the same time. An odd sort of journey – and yes: a cheeky group does make cheeky music.
It’s going to be an incredible experience to find the old turntable in the attic, lift the arm, and put the needle down onto this LP.
Nils Økland is a unique trendsetter on his instrument, the Hardanger fiddle. He has made four solo recordings, the most recent of which was released by the German record company ECM in the spring of 2009. He is well known for his recordings with the Christian Wallumrød Ensemble and from his participation in a large number of folk-music based groups.
Sigbjørn Apeland is a trained organist, and holds Norway’s only doctorate in ethnomusicology. He studied free jazz with the legendary drummer John Stevens, and the music he composed for the silent film Jeanne d’Arc attracted full houses in churches. He has collaborated with musicians such as Sigrid T. Moldestad, and among his recordings is a critically acclaimed collection of hymns with singer Berit Opheim.
Øyvind Skarbø has studied under Terje Isungset, and has taken study trips to Nigeria and Cuba. He performs in various constellations including the group BMX and a duo along with Kresten Osgood, and also arranges the concert series Øyvind Jazzforum in Bergen.
