ARVE HENRIKSEN & ELLING VANBERG

The making of this record has been a very special experience for me. The entire idea and inspiration originated long ago. I met Elling Vanberg only once, in 1983. This meeting between the local poet from Olden and me, a 15-year-old pupil listening to him read his poems aloud at Stryn Lower Secondary School, had a tremendous influence on me. In fact, even more than I realized at the time. So in 1995, two years after Elling died, when I was commissioned to compose music for Balejazz Festival in Balestrand, my immediate reaction was to use his texts. The recollection of the sound of his voice reading his own poems inspired me to do some research, and I discovered recordings of Ellivan reading some of his own poems in the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) archives in Førde and received permission to use them. After I had presented this commission, which I called Farande bilete (Moving Pictures), at two concerts, I had originally intended to record it with NORCD. This idea never materialized. The challenge of combining recited texts and music frightened me, and I abandoned the idea. I continued to use some of the spoken text sound files at various concerts with improvised music with the band Food and in my collaboration with Terje Isungset and Karl Seglem.

Many years went by, and after working on the album Strjon, which I released with Rune Grammofon in 2007, I felt closely connected to my roots, childhood and early sources of inspiration. I once again recalled Ellivan´s spoken words, and I started to rework the material. This new process felt right. I also discovered new ways to listen to and gain inspiration from his poems, novels and texts, which are now available in three books, Dei lækjande urteorda, Songen om dei store slettene and Grunnsteinar.

I have my own personal connection with this music, and I hope that the form of the record and Ellivan´s voice can give the listener a glimpse of nature, life on the farm, daily life in the fjord district, deep relationships and the seasons. Ellivan´s poems can be seen as personal and local, but also as having a universal perspective. They can be interpreted in many different ways.

I am grateful to Anne Margrete Vanberg and her daughter Sigrid Kristin for giving me access to this treasure trove, Magne Dragesæt, who brought Elling to my school in 1983, Ove Eide, who with his strong belief in the written word edited the three books and enthusiastically helped me with all the text on this album, NRK for supporting the production, Karl Seglem at NORCD, BaleJazz, the municipality of Stryn, Reidar Skår at 7etg, Helge Sten at audio virus lab, all the musicians who contributed their energy and inspiration, and especially to Ellivan, who left us this rich legacy.

Warm soundscapes:poetry from Elling Vanberg (picture) and Arve Henriksen

Trumpeter Arve Henriksen says that the making of his new album with poet Elling Vanberg (1937-1993) was a very special experience for him. The entire idea and inspiration originated long ago, and he had originally intended to record it many years ago. Those ideas never materialized, but after working on the album Strjon, which he released with Rune Grammofon in 2007, he felt closer connected to his roots, childhood and early sources of inspiration. He once again recalled Elling Vanberg´s spoken words, and started to rework the material. Two years later NORCD is proud to share this very special album from master musician Arve Henriksen with old and new listeners. Street date June 22.2009.
