Summers, Silvola, Kvam
Contemporary folk music infused with improvisatory elements, performed with plenty of attitude. Energetic, frenetic and danceable one moment, lyrical, tear-inducing and evocative the next, their repertoire consists primarily of their own compositions, interspersed with traditional tunes from Scotland, Finland and Norway, reflecting the members' nationalities. The sound of the trio is based on Sarah-Jane Summers' stunning fiddle-playing. Brought up immersed in the old Highland fiddle tradition, her innovative use of the Norwegian Hardanger fiddle plus her love of improvisation combine to create a highly personal, new sound in the fiddle world. Fresh from completing a Masters degree in Norwegian folk music and free improvisation on the Hardanger fiddle at the Norwegian State Academy of Music in Oslo, Sarah-Jane has quite rightly been described as a pioneer on the Hardanger fiddle. The trio's exciting, beautiful sound is completed by Juhani Silvola's powerhouse guitar playing and Morten Kvam's highly creative double-bass playing. Both bring a wide array of influences and experience from the jazz and experimental music worlds, which combine to create the unique sonic blend of this trio.
